Experience

I have a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in Psychological and Brain Sciences and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Barnard College where I also minored in History. I have taught and tutored at the undergraduate level while also volunteering as a math tutor for high school students. I most enjoy being a math tutor, though I am also interested in other subjects too. In my vision and attention research I broadly used statistics, so I believe I am well informed to speak of how certain types of concepts have real-world applications. As an avid bookworm, I also offer preparation for the Critical Reading portion of the SAT and tutoring in general for writing. I enjoy creative writing as a hobby. I am currently in the process of writing portions of my dissertation so that it may be published. I believe this experience demonstrates that I am able to assist in writing literary analysis, historical research, and lab reports. Apart from reading and writing, I like to play the hammered dulcimer and teach myself how to write code for new languages.I like to look out for studying strategies that may not relate to the subject matter when students struggle. These may include text anxiety, their belief that a subject's content may not be useful in later life, or a lack of organizational skills. For me, there is generally a few ways to tackle problems and students need to discover what they believe works best. Since I have extensively studied learning and its application to memory I'm generally able to advise students as to what would work the best for them. Gaining a fundamental understanding for the content may be ideal for students, but I believe test-taking strategies for multiple choice and standardized tests will result in a big change in scores. So the strategies I have used for test taking have been very successful.
